Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. The liver is a vital organ that processes nutrients, filters the blood, and fights infections. When the liver is inflamed or damaged, its function can be affected. Heavy alcohol use, toxins, some medications, and certain medical conditions can cause hepatitis. Hepatitis is most often caused by a virus.

What’s included in the cost of the test?

This test kit is provided free of charge through the Mineral County Health Department. There is no charge to you for shipping, test kit(s), or laboratory cost. If you need to see a provider based on the results of this test, you will be financially responsible for care and treatment. The Mineral County Health Department can connect you with programs that can assist you if you are not insured, or underinsured.

Who should order this test:

If any of the following are true for you, Hepatitis C testing is recommended.

• You are or have been sexually active
• You’ve never been tested before
• You are pregnant, or there is a chance you may be pregnant
• You’ve ever shared needles with anyone
• You received a blood transfusion or organ transplant before July 1992
• You’ve exchanged sex for drugs or money
• You’ve been incarcerated
• You’re a health care, emergency medical, or public safety worker that has exposure to sharps and/or blood/bodily fluids, or previously experienced a needle stick
