HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It weakens a person’s immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. There is currently no effective cure for HIV. But with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled. Some groups of people in the United States are more likely to get HIV than others because of many factors, including their sex partners and risk behaviors.

What’s included in the cost of the test?

This test kit is provided free of charge through the Mineral County Health Department. There is no charge to you for shipping, test kit(s), or laboratory cost. If you need to see a provider based on the results of this test, you will be financially responsible for care and treatment. The Mineral County Health Department can connect you with programs that can assist you if you are not insured, or underinsured.

Who should order this test:

If any of the following are true for you, HIV testing is recommended.

• You are sexually active
• You’ve never been tested before, or would like to be tested again
• You are pregnant, or there is a chance you may be pregnant
• You’ve ever shared needles with anyone
• You’ve exchanged sex for drugs or money
• You’ve been diagnosed with and/or treated for another sexually transmitted infection
• You’ve been incarcerated
